Every year, in Spring, Mike takes the other kids to explore Balboa Park while Olivia is in ballet. Last year Olivia was able to be in the same class as Avery. Avery's family goes to our church. This is the girls after their Spring Showcase.

Happy May Day
Let us take our baskets early
To the meadows green,
While the wild flowers still are pearly
With the dewdrops sheen.
Fill them full of blossoms rosy,
Violets and gay
Cowslips, every pretty posy
Welcoming the May.
Then our lovely loads we'll carry
Down the village street,
On each door, with laughter merry,
Hang a basket sweet.
Definitely a new tradition in our home. Our neighbors loved them and the kids loved the excitement of ringing the doorbells and running. A lovely way for Joseph to give on his own birthday too!
Bloomin' Beautiful III
I feel like this has been a really long Spring with all these little cold snaps we have been having. It almost seems like the Garden started blooming first and TG Park is about a week behind. All the cherry trees were in full bloom at the Garden about a week ago and they are only just really pretty over at the park now.
So, these are the cherry trees - Japanese, Chinese, Weeping, etc. I used to think they were all different kinds of trees. Apparently the weeping ones are my favorite because that is almost all of my pictures. Sorry you don't have anything to compare - they are all white-ish to pale pink.
I believe this one was one of the Japanese variety - but I took the picture to upclose to tell for sure.

When I used to dress Olivia in clothes that were too small for her? No, really what I am asking is do you remember this cute little thing two springs ago? This is what the daffodils look like - since we forgot to take pictures last week.

We drove out to the Nature Reserve last week - hoping to beat the rain - we lost. We drove through the Reserve and looked at the daffodils (didn't take a single picture, duh), and then played a bit in the rain. 
For those of you who have not been out there, we recommend it. Great to bird watch, hike/walk around, lots of different types of vegetation. And they have an excellent bookstore! I am not kidding - children's books for $5-6 that would be $13+ elsewhere. Ordering good books is a hobby for the lady who does it there, so she really gets the good stuff. She marks up the adult books a bit more, but they are still a descent deal.

First of all, these are not tulip poplars - which is what I have called them for years. They are actually magnolias. The first two are saucier magnolias and the third is a star magnolia. Some magnolias actually lose their leaves - unlike the big waxy leafed, sweet smelling, white bloom variety we are used to. 
Tulip poplars are actually orange-ish. They grow tall (around 80 feet) quickly, which means they aren't terribly strong - which also means it was a bad idea for us to buy one and plant it between our sidewalk and the street. Good thing ours died (due to lack of water - lazy mother nature!) otherwise it might have fallen into our house during one of St. Louis famous spring or January wind storms.

This is going to be the second installment series - Spring. I grew up in the dogwoods and rhodadedrons (I am positive I didn't spell that right.) of East Tennessee, but I still can't find anything to compare to a St. Louis Spring. It could possibly be that we live in the best part of the city - right in the corner of Tower Grove Park and the Missouri Botanical Garden (anyone want to buy our house...it is lovely and for sale) - two of the best tended plots in the city.
Only the yellow and orange and some red tulip varieties are up - there are still a couple of weeks likely until the tulips are peaked. The daffodils will probably peak out this week which is why we intend to make a trip out to the Shaw Nature Reserve - they have fields and fields of daffodils.
