It's better than just "Why?"

Joseph has delivered some stellar questions lately.

Last night, on about his 15th trip out of bed, he asked his dad, "Do bunnies dance?"

So as not to encourage the disobedience of being out of bed, Mike just said he would tell him in the morning. Unfortunately, Joseph did get out of bed again (for a different, unremembered reason) and unfortunately did get a spanking - after which he asked through a sniff, "Daddy, do bunnies dance?"

He still didn't get his answer until the morning. But from his sister he learned yes, bunnies indeed do dance.

On one of his earlier trips out of bed last night, he came to solve an argument brewing between he and Olivia. Does August (our neighbor) have a sister? Olivia said no, Joseph was convinced he did have a sister. In reality August is an only child. I tried to explain this to Joseph.

"But, but...who is the girl on the pink bike?" He asks, very concerned.

"The pink bike??? Joseph, that is your sister. Olivia."

Joseph, after a long, thoughtful pause..."Oh."

Back to bed.

Yesterday at lunch, with his food all over his face and hands and his plate empty, he picks up his fork and asks, "What was this fork for?"

Good grief.

Read to him until he falls asleep. Does it really make anyone happy to spank a child before bed? Then you all wake up with the memory of violence. Is is really necessary to spank your children anyway? They are little, you are big, that means you are using physical violence on a child. Think about it. Calm down and spend some time with your child. One day they won't get out of bed and ask you questions, what will you do then. Get through it and enjoy your children, regardless!

Laina,
Thanks for your concern for our children. Rest assured there is no violence occurring in our home and we do not discipline in anger. Clearly you have very specific views on spanking children and we respect your right to have them. Sounds like you are a very loving mother. I hope you can trust that we are loving parents as well and would never allow our children to fall asleep in doubt of our love for them. In fact, we love them too much not to discipline them...in the ways that we feel are appropriate. By the way, we would love to know who you are and how you came to read our blog.
